Bible Reading Program for 2012

This week we begin our new Bible reading program for 2012. It is an expedited through-the-Bible-in-a-year reading program. Every week there will readings for Monday through Friday from the book or books of the Bible that we will cover in our adult Sunday school class on the following Sunday. This program is designed to guard against the kind of frustration that usually comes quickly with most yearly Bible reading programs. The readings are not too long. You will not read the entire Bible word for word, but only key portions of each book. You can read more if you want. Or you can even read less. But if you read some portion of what is assigned and come to class the following Sunday, you will get a good overview of the entire Bible.

A Special Vespers Service of Prayer & Praise

On Sunday evening, December 4, at 6:00 PM, we will have a special evening worship service to celebrate Bill Hoover's 25 years of service as our organist and 20 years as our Director of Music. Our daughter churches, Cornerstone and Resurrection, are invited to join us that evening, including participating in the choir. Please bring a platter of appetizers to share at the reception. Special Guest Speaker - Sunday Evening, August 7

This Sunday evening (Aug 7) we will have a special guest speaker. Dr. Roy Atwood from New St. Andrews College will be with us for the evening service and the cookout afterwards. Roy has some great insights on Christian education, especially higher education. He will be speaking on "The Biblical Perspective on College for Christians." His talk will be designed to help Christian parents make wise, godly decisions with their children about college.

Please fee free to invite others who may be interested. The service begins at 5 PM and is followed immediately by a cookout on the church parking lot & grounds.

I Believe in Jesus Christ, His Only Son and Our Lord

For centuries, the miraculous incarnation of God in human flesh has been an offence against human reason and logic. As Thomas Jefferson hopefully specluated during the formation of our nation, "And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with all this artificial scaffolding."

And yet, in the Apostle's Creed, Christians still confess their belief and trust in Jesus Christ, the only son of God, their Lord, who was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. What do we mean when we confess that Jesus was born of a virgin? Why does it matter whether or not Jesus is the Son of God? Come and join us on Sunday evening, July 17 at 5pm at Providence Church as we consider these questions together.

I Believe in God the Father Almighty

This Sunday evening, July 10, we will explore the signficance of the first line of the of the Apostle's Creed: "I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth."

Some of us are fathers. All of us have in some sense been fathered. And these relationships work to define us all in significant ways. As the American novelist Tom Wolfe puts it: "The deepest search in life, it seems to me, the thing that in one way or another is central to all living, is our search for a father, not just the father of our flesh or the father of our lost youth, but an image of strength and wisdom external to our need and superior to our hunger to which the belief and power of our lives can be united."

So what then does it mean to believe, and to trust, in God as Father? Come and join us at Providence Church this Sunday at 5pm as we discuss this question together (and stay for the cookout afterwards!).

This Summer: The Apostles' Creed

For over 1600 years, the Apostles' Creed has been used by the church all over the world to provide basic instruction and introduction to the Christian faith. This summer at Providence, during our Sunday evening services, we'll consider together the content of this historic creed, outlining in a basic and clear way what it is that Christians everywhere have always believed to be true.

Our services this summer will be simple, straight-forward and welcoming to both members and newcomers. At the conclusion of each Sunday evening service, we will gather in the church parking lot for food, drink and fellowship. We hope that you'll consider joining us regularly this Summer, and perhaps even bringing someone new with you!

Missouri Presbytery Update

I should probably keep everyone up to date on what's going on in Missouri Presbytery. At the January 2011 meeting the presbytery voted to exonerate me (Pastor Meyers) of the allegations of false teaching raised in a letter the presbytery received last year (April 2010). You can read the report of the committee that examined the allegations here.

After this vote in January, a few presbyters filed a complaint against the presbytery's action. A committee was then formed to make recommendations to the presbytery on how to answer the complaint. That committee reported to the presbytery on April 19th and recommended that the presbytery deny all the accusations made by the complainants that the presbytery erred in their decision. Missouri Presbytery voted overwhelmingly to deny the complaint. This complaint committee's report as well as the complaint can be downloaded here as a pdf file.

Recently the Missouri Presbytery issued a formal statement about my status:

Missouri Presbytery Statement Concerning Rev. Jeffrey Meyers

The Missouri Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America wishes to declare publicly that Rev. Jeffrey Meyers, Senior Pastor at Providence Presbyterian Church in Crestwood, Missouri, has been for 17 years, and continues to be, a member in good standing in our Presbytery. We reaffirm our judgment, after a protracted investigation, that allegations against Rev. Meyers--namely, that he opposes some of the great and precious doctrines of our church as set out in the Westminster Standards -- are false and inaccurate. Anyone interested to read the Presbytery's evaluation of Rev. Jamie Soles Concert on June 5th

Providence Church in Crestwood invites you and your family to join us for a free concert featuring the music of Jamie Soles on Sunday June 5th at 5:00 PM. If you love how the whole Bible testifies of Jesus, you will love Jamie Soles’ music.

Jamie Soles is a Christian singer/songwriter from Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, with several albums to his credit. His latest CD, Wells, reflects on, among other things, the significant meetings that occur at wells in the Bible, and ultimately to THE Living Water that flows in and through us to a thirsty world. His latest Psalm CD, Pure Words, contains word for word contemporary arrangements of the first 16 Psalms.

Jamie Soles performs music for the whole family. His kids’ music, for which he is best known, is serious-minded fun, and loved by all ages for its ability to open up Bible stories making them accessible.
